Did I mention St Louis ?! I don't think so !!

It does not need a physical damage to an airport to cancel flights. I have put together some flight cancellation news in another article in response your colleague's(katmi) criticisms.

"不要把芝加哥想成了冬天動不動就在Winter Storm,

I think you interpret my comments wrongly, read it with open mind please. I live in the US for over 20+ years and I watch and listen to news reports in English everyday, I know what I said and I have all the facts before I put it out to share it with viewers who happen to be interested in this particular subject.

In the case of winter storm:
Geographically, Chicago is right on the Lake Michigan, which make it very stormy in the winter. I have no interests in writing something here to argue, which city has better chance to have winter storms, single out Chicago is simply b/c it is a one of the biggest airline's main hub in US.

"O'hare機場是全美第二大機場,一年四季乘客都很多,冬天的機票價格並不會比其它城市要便宜"
I am not sure if it is always cheaper in winter, but I do find it much cheaper to travel to Chicago in winter time. I wonder why........

In every winter, there are lots of flight cancellations all major airports, not just in Chicago, of course!! However, since Chicago is airline's main hub for flight transfer, for travelers who's finally destination is not Chicago, it is something a savvy traveler would avoid in the snowy months. Of course, it does not happen every day, but no one can predict when, I would not take my chance of having my vacation ruined. For example, I will take a transfer flight in Seattle, Phoenix to my final destination, but not Chicago in winter. Below are some fact sheets, you are welcome to fact check everything !! Actually, I suggest you should do this before you discredit someone else's contributions !!

There are also summer storms cause flight delay or cancellation I will try to avoid afternoon arrival in Dallas in the summer time, for instance. Because, due to the summer storm, Dallas airport shuts down the airport sometimes.

I respect you point of views, I like to collect information that is out there as many as possible. it is up to each individual to process , and apply it upon making decisions for trip planing.

Let us take Dallas as an example, since you mentioned about Dallas.
Feel free to do the fact check yourself by google "flight cancellations tornado"
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"While tornadoes can occur at any time of the year, tornado season’s traditional period of peak activity is from March through early July. Each year, an average of 1,200 tornadoes touch down in the United States, and the vast majority form in the spring and early summer."

Dallas Tornado 2012: Flight Cancellations Continue at DFW Airport,

As twisters tear through the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex in Texas, American Airlines has cancelled nearly every flight in and out of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

GRAPEVINE, Texas – American Airlines and its regional affiliate have canceled dozens of flights at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport after tornadoes hit North Texas.

"夏天值得避開的是美國南方的轉機點,例如PHX或德州的機場。

Yes, this is correct for Dallas, and Dallas is a main hub for American Airline. Atlanta is a main hub for Delta, Georgia sees its third worst tornado season.

The flight cancellations in the summer season are due to hot weather/ summer storm mostly, tornado may just causes flight delay, I apologize that I did not spell it out right in detail.

"不過坦白說,這種機率也沒多高,只比其他區域高一點點而已",
we think it is pretty high, if a short summer vacation been ruined by wasting a day, due to flight cancellation or airport shutdown.

"不需要反應過度"
Each individual has very different take/response when it comes to processing some information, based on their own personal experience. If you have not run into problem likes this, it does not mean the chances are slim.

We live in Northern California, we hardly get any bad weather causes flight cancellations all year round, having a trip ruined by bad weather, is pretty bad to any of us. Time is precious for us who have to work to make a living !!

I respect your thought, but I do not like that you did not have your base covered, before you make a statement saying some one else is wrong.

I have been living in the States for 25 years. I read and watch daily news here as well. With 23 years living in Chicago, I experience the weather pattern in daily bases, including all the Chicago news you quoted. So it's not necessary to bring up the length of living in the States.

Your previous post seemed to imply that airfare is cheaper to Chicago than to other cities in winter time due to the winter storms. My response was to point out that there was no direct relationship between airfare and winter storm.

Airfare is decided by demand/supply and competitive environment. Winter time is Chicago's off season. Many leisure travelers do not come simply due to cold weather, not due to the possible winter storms. So it's possible to fetch cheaper fare to Chicago. But that also depends on your origin. You did not mention the origin of the such cheapest fares. A lot of readers in this forum are in Taiwan including the original post of this thread. The airfares from Asia to Chicago in winter time is cheaper than in summer, but not cheaper than in other West Coast hub cities. A lot of times it's not even cheaper than NYC even though NYC is farther. But domestically, I am sure you may find airfare to Chicago cheapest from where you live sometimes.

By the way, in your previous post, I think you misunderstood the original post. You said "I assume it is the reason your air fair is much cheaper among others." But in his original post, he already decided to come to Chicago from Taiwan. He simply said the cheapest airfare he found was TPE-NRT-ATL-ORD route. It has nothing to do with airfare to ORD cheaper than others. I think because you misunderstood the post, you related airfare to winter storms.

Chicago never gets away from some winter storms, so do many NE part of this country. Comparing to California or southern regions, the flights to this part of country are more prone to the bad winter weather without doubt. But it's still not like cancellation due to snow always occurs in extremely high frequency. This year, due to polar vortex effect, is particularly worse than usual. But in normal year, winter storms causing mass cancellation happen 3-5 times in a winter. Is such average worse enough to totally avoid Chicago as a transfer point? Well, it all depends on your need. If your trip is so critical that you cannot afford even slight weather risk, then Chicago is definitely not for you. Otherwise, there are still tons of through passengers in Chicago during winter time. Actually, the cancellation due to summer thunderstorms in Chicago is probably more frequent than winter storm. Besides, the worst culprit of the delay at ORD is the congestion. This happens all year round.

Besides, the bad weather occurred in the major hub can have domino effect on other airports with better weather as well. For example, from Houston to San Francisco, you may think bad weather in the north should not impact this route. But the scheduled aircraft may actually gets stuck in the other weather affected airport. That in turns causes the delay or even cancellation on this route. With the complicated air traffic network and aircraft scheduling, the "hub" you think a safer bet in winter can still be indirectly impacted by the bad weather of other regions.

As far as summer, since your previous post specifically mentioned tornado rather than summer storms, my reply only focused on tornado. I caught the news of tornado damages on St Louis Aiport, but missed the Dallas Airport flight cancellation. But again, in terms of tornado, the chance of its impact on major hub is so infrequent that I don't think it's a significant concern. But based on your relay, I have to acknowledge that everyone has different threshold for weather risk.

Also remind you that weather risks are not just limited to winter/summer storms, fog can be a major force for delay/cancellation. SFO is one of the major hubs to be affected by fog more than others.
