FYI, it's very difficult or near impossible to drive from North America to South America because there is an area called the Darien Gap between Panama and Colombia. The only way to get a car across is by cargo ship but you would need to deal with import and customs.
Aside from that there are insurance and drivers license regulations that is different for each country. I'd imagine it can be pretty easy to drive through Mexico but past that is relatively unknown.

Just buy another car in Colombia then.... Keep your car in Panama and you can still drive it back afterward you finish South America. Why spend the extra $3000?
